The 10 best ROMCOMs to watch before Valentines Day

Two months ago, I wanted to do a collaboration with the lovely Hannah Grace, who has amazing peotry on her blog (definitely give her a read!) on our favorite RomComs, now I find myself 2 months later still not having done it. Buuut since this is the first of February and it’s only 14 more days ’till Valentines Day I thought I’d make up for it, dedicating these RomComs to this special day and the time before for anyone wanting to get into the mood;-) I know I’ll be watching these in the next couple of days…because I am a hopeless romantic… I admit it..

So since this is a collaboration, here’s the link to Hannah’s post . And this is her post on her favorite RomComs, the one we got inspiration from for our collab! Now, let me stop instroducing this post and start introducing my favorite RomComs ever, all perfectly suitable for Valentines Day! Let’s get cozy…

the 10 romcoms you need to watch before valentines Day.png

  1. Valentine’s Day

Plot: A lot of little stories of related characters, dealing with the happenings on Valentines Day. If that may be an accepted and declined proposal, to the discovery of old secrets, the coming out of a famous footballer, the “I-hate-Valentine’s-Day” party that no one wants to attend, but that becomes the biggest party of the day in the end or the impossible love – it’s all wonderfully portrayed and depicted. Real stories, real heart-breaks and real happy endings and twists. A joy to watch:-)
Cast: Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Héctor Elizondo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts, Carter Jenkins, and Taylor Swift
Why you should watch it: Because the name already say’s you should watch it on Valentine’s Day…or before…duh;-) and it’s just an incredibly romantic, cute and wonderfully dreamy movie.
Favorite Quote: “Do you have another bottle of wine?”

  2. When Harry met Sally

Harry and Sally take the journey on together to New York by car. They learn a lot about each other, but none of them likes the other. Arguments on the ride include the question whether a man and a woman can be friends without one of them wanting sex.
They separate in New York and don’t meet for 5 years and don’t start actually talking and liking each other for another 5 years. That’s the point when they start to become good friends. And like Harry predicted, a man and a woman can’t be friends, because the sex always get’s in the way….
    Cast: Billy Chrystal, Meg Ryan
Why you should watch it: Because it’s a classic movie of the RomCom Genre, with an amazing performance of Meg Ryan! It’s funny, witty, entertaining and very romantic. Plus, it’s a totally different story than anything we know today as a romantic love story.
Favorite Quote: “I’ll have what she’s having”

  3. Notting Hill

Plot: One day the super famous actor Anna comes into the tiny travel book shop of William to buy a book. When she leaves, she doesn’t know that a few hours later she will bump together with exactly that weird guy and have coffee spilled all over her shirt, which will force her to get a new shirt at the place of William. She also doesn’t know that she’ll fall in love with that guy and force him into uncomfortable situations pretending to be an editor of the magazine “Horse and Hound” in order to talk to her.
    Cast: Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts
Why you should watch it: If you want to watch THE RomCom, this is your choice. Because not only the story and setting in London is absolutely enchanting, but Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant play this romance wonderfully! And please, isn’t the fact that Hugh Grant is in it enough?!;-)
Favorite Quote: “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

  4. Bridget Jones Diary

Plot: Bridget Jones is a clumsy single, who is sick of everyone asking her how her love life is going. Not so great. But that’s about to change when her mother tries to set her up with an old toddler friend of hers, who recently got a divorce, and she starts sleeping with her boss, who’s absolutely perfect. The question is though, who is better for her? Her perfect, funny boss or the nice, corny divorcée?
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant
Why you should watch it: Well…Hugh Grant…:-) okay, okay…It’s a wonderfully realistic story and main character, as Bridget has normal (single) people problems and when the two men start battling over her, the fun doesn’t stop.

  5. How to lose a guy in 10 days

Plot: Andy Anderson is supposed to write an article about “How to lose a guy in 10 days” for Composure Magazine, doing everything girls do wrong in relationships, even though what she wants to write about is politics and things that matter. For her piece she needs the perfect man.
Benjamin Barry has a bet that he can make any girl fall in love with him in 10 days, if he wins the bet he get’s a huge pitch which will bring him further in his advertising career. All he still needs in the perfect girl.
They are brought together by the other side of the bet on Benjamins side. And that is when the fun begins. Benjamin trying everything he can to keep her, while she makes his life a living hell – mostly.
Cast: Kate Hudson,Matthew McConaughey, Adam Goldberg
Why you should watch it: If you need something to laugh real hard, but end with your heart warming up as you watch the last scene? Then this is for you! Personally, I’ve seen this movie way too many times. But it’s just such a perfect mix between funny and downright cute and romantic!
Favorite Quote: “Bullshit. You heard me. Bullshit”

  6. The proposal

Plot: Margaret Tate is the boss of a big american company and the problem is that she’s Canadian and her visa just ran up, which means she has to be deported. Lucky for her Andrew, her assistant, was just at the wrong place at the wrong time and so she lies that she’s marrying him in order to stay head of the company and in the US. She then blackmails him to play the game with her and goes to his grandmothers birthday to Alaska to meet the family and get married. But there she finds herself actually letting that hard shell go and starting to really like Andrew. Unfortunately there is her superior who sent a spy after her to bring out the truth and get her deported.
    Cast: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds
Why you should watch it: First of all the scenery of Alaska is incredible! Secondly the story is actually romantic in the end, it starts quite messed up and weird, but it get’s funnier, there are scenes…I could crack up.. it is definitely staying weird, which only makes the whole thing funnier.
Favorite quote: “It’s like an easter egg hunt”

  7. Maid in Manhattan

Plot: Marissa is a maid in a big hotel in Manhattan and by chance her son meets the aspiring Senator Mr. Marshall and wants to walk his dog, begging his Mom to let him go. Mr. Marshall insists she come. The sparks fly immediately. There is only one problem, Mr. Marshall thinks Marissa is a hotel guest, not a maid.
    Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Ralf Fiennes
Why you should watch it: If the argument with JLo and Ralf Fiennes playing a couple isn’t strong enough, think New York City romance, the traditional way – famous man, simple, but oh-so-extraordinary girl.
Favorite Quote: “It’s more like a dream”

  8. 27 dresses

Plot: Jane is a wedding planner and maid of honor for a lot of people. Sometimes she manages two weddings in one night. In such a night she meets Kevin, a guy who hates weddings and made his mission to stalk her. As he finds her attractive and is secretly writing an article about her in the column he writes in the newspaper: weddings. As she starts to let Kevin in her life, she shows him all the maid of honor dresses she’s worn- 27 to be exact.
The catastrophe is real when her boss, with whom she has been in love for ages, wants to marry her little sister, who is pretending to be someone else in order for him to like her and that with success.
    Cast: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden
Why you should watch it: Because it has everything a perfect RomCom needs: funny, weird scenes, a little drama, mixed with hopeful romance and a lot of beautiful dresses!
    Favorite Quote: “Get over here”

  9. Pretty Woman

Plot: All Edward wants to know is how to get to Beverly Hills, he asks a girl on the street who offers to bring him there for money. Having no other option he agrees and so he finds out that this girl is a prostitute. He thinks she has more in her than that and so he asks her out on a date, of course paying her to be with him. He asks her to stay with him for a while, of course paying her and not only fancy clothes. When a friend of Edward spills the beans on her actual job, they separate, or rather, she runs….
    Cast: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts
Why you should watch it: Because this wouldn’t be a list of RomComs nor a proper Valentines Day without having watched Pretty Woman once;-). It’s a romantic comedy classic. Period.
    Favorite Quote: “Housekeeping is singing.”

  10. You’ve got mail

Plot: Both Joe and Kathleen are in the book business. They met online and are in love there. But in real life they know each other and hate the other one equally much, only they do not know they are the ones from the internet.
When Kathleen’s little Bookstore has to close, because of Joe’s massive one, he advises her to fight over the internet, without knowing that he is telling her to fight against him….
    Cast: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
Why you your watch it: It’s a classic. Not much to say there.. Funny, moving, romantic, screwed up, lovely and very inspiring to pick up a book at the nearest tiny book store.
Favorite Quote: “Don’t cry, shopgirl. Don’t cry.”

  1. Julia Roberts being my favorite actress, I am a bit partial towards her movies. Pretty Woman and Notting Hill are my favorites which I have watched numerous times.

  2. I haven’t seen some of these movies, but I can say that my favorite was How to loose a guy in 10 days. It was so funny. I think I watched it hundreds of time. My favorite romantic movies are those made by Hallmark. They aren’t great quality but I am a sucker for love o I watched every single one of them.

    Happy Valentine’s Day ❤

    1. Oh yes, How to loose a guy in 10 days is also one of my favorites! I’ve also seen it soo many times:-)
I know Hallmark. They have a lot of great movies! Which ones are your favorites?
Hahaha well then that makes two “suckers for love”!

  3. I have seen everyone of these movies, and can honestly say they’re some of the best rom-coms for valentines day. They’ll all have you crying, laughing, and feeling warm inside by the end.
Pretty Woman is probably one of my favourites, though. Okay it probably IS my fave rom-com. Another good romance flick, though not necessarily for V-day is Dirty Dancing. It was one of my grandmother’s favourite movies, and I actually own the dvd and poor hubby is so tired of it, lol.
